Extramural Clinical and Research Externships
Summer externships and research opportunities are available through various hospitals in the Metropolitan Detroit area and through Wayne State University and other area institutions. Summer research opportunities are also available at institutions across the country and abroad. These are excellent ways to gain valuable clinical and research experience. Information about these opportunities is posted on the “Research Opportunities” board outside the Office of Student Affairs and applications are available in the Office of Student Affairs. TL1 Predoctoral ProgramWashington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. This clinical and translational research training opportunity is sponsored by the NIH and promotes clinical research careers for predoctoral students in medical and allied health professions. The TL1 Program provides support for two programs — Summer (8 week) and Year-Long For the TL1 Predoctoral Program, applicants identify potential mentors from a list of more than 200 outstanding clinical researchers. The mentor provides the necessary guidance and support for completion of the candidate’s application. Selected students become active members of the mentor’s laboratory and participate in courses and special seminars. Students receive a stipend, tuition for required courses, travel allowance, and year-long trainees receive paid health insurance benefits. The Zucker Hillside Hospital Medical Student Research FellowshipThe Zuker Hillside Hospital is a psychiatric facility located adjacent to the Long Island Jewish Medical Center on the border of Nassau County and Queens. The goal of this fellowship is to provide the opportunity for medical students to engage in psychiatric research under the supervision of senior clinical and basic science investigators. During the fellowship, students will be paired with PIs according to their interests in the field such as ADHD, aggressive spectrum disorders, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, etc. Students will receive a stipend of $1,250 per month for the length of the fellowship (ideal length is two months). American Society of Nephrology Student Scholar GrantThe purpose of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) Student Scholar Grant is to enable medical students with an interest in either basic or clinical research to spend 10 to 52 weeks engaged in continuous full-time research in a nephrology lab. The student must work with a mentor that is a current ASN member. Students enrolled in MSTP programs (pursuing MD-PhDs) are not eligible for the program. Eligible Applicants: All students |
Baystate Medical Center Summer Student Scholar ProgramThe Baystate Medical Center, the western campus of Tufts University School of Medicine, and UMass Amherst is offering a mentored research program for medical students. This 10-week program allows you to participate in a research project from start to finish and present project outcomes to the scientific community. In addition to the research experience, you participate in lectures on the basics of research and seminars. This program runs from the end of May to the first of August with a stipend of $3,500. Eligible Applicants: Students between their first and second year. |
FAER Anesthesia Research FellowshipFAER created the Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship to encourage talented medical students to consider careers in anesthesiology research and perioperative medicine. The MSARF program offers medical students an 8-week anesthesia-related research experience and the opportunity to present research findings at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting. NIH – Clinical Research Summer InternshipsThe National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers paid internships for summer clinical research. At the Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, students work with mentors who are researchers and allied health professionals; participate in the NIH Research Poster Festival with results generated by their work in this program; and attend weekly lectures presented by NIH investigators. NIH – Summer InternshipsSummer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. The NIH consists of the 240-bed Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center and more than 1200 laboratories/research projectslocated on the main campus in Bethesda, MD and the surrounding area as well as in Baltimore and Frederick, MD; Research Triangle Park, NC; Phoenix, AZ; Hamilton, MT; Framingham, MA; and Detroit, MI. NOTE: the number of positions in Phoenix, Hamilton, Framingham, and Detroit is limited. Internshipscover a minimum of eight weeks, with students generally arriving at the NIH in May or June. The NIH Institutes and the Office of Intramural Training & Education sponsor a wide range of summer activities including lectures featuring distinguished NIH investigators, career/professional development workshops, and Summer Poster Day. Arnold P. Gold Foundation Summer FellowshipThe Student Summer Research Fellowship grants are modeled on NIH short-term training grants, but are awarded for research in community health and cultural competency issues, rather than laboratory work. The Foundation’s goal is to provide an opportunity for students to work directly with patients and to become more compassionate, relationship-centered physicians.The student is expected to carry-out the research under the full-time oversight of a mentor. The research should have the potential to be on-going. A final report is due at the conclusion of the ten weeks. The first half of the grant funds are sent upon Foundation acceptance of the student’s proposal and receipt of a signed grant agreement from the school. Vanderbilt Center in Molecular ToxicologySummer 10 week research for students interested in conducting research in environmental health. Vanderbilt’s Molecular Toxicology program has developed into one of the best in the nation. Students will choose a mentor and become involved in environmental health research, meetings, seminar series and poster sessions. Stipends are available. Roswell Park Summer Oncology Research ProgramThe Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY is offering a summer clinical and/or basic science research opportunity with special emphasis on cancer prevention through lectures and practical experiences. The program will run from June 4 through July 24, 2012 with a stipend of $350/week. Funds may be available for room expenses. Eligible Applicants:all medical students |
Harvard Global Health Effectiveness ProgramThis program will train public health leaders, students and physicians through a curriculum of epidemiology, management science and global health delivery case teaching, enabling them to effectively design and manage programs that improve health outcomes for the populations they serve. The program in Boston, MA will consist of two credit-granting courses and one seminar taught by senior Harvard faculty. Eligible Applicants: Should demonstrate commitment to global health and experience in global health organizations, with a background in healthcare or a related field. Tuition and fees for the courses will total approximately $4,400. |
